Whether you're a novice or an expert when it comes to the practice of aromatherapy, or you just want to make your home smell like your favorite spa, an essential oil diffuser is one of the easiest and most effective devices for reaping the benefits of aromatherapy. It can help you relax, boost your mood, improve your focus, or just provide a pleasant scent.

There are countless to choose from, so picking the best essential oil diffuser to suit your personal needs can take some real consideration.

After several years of testing some of the most popular oil diffusers on the market, we chose the Saje Aroma Om (available at Saje) as the best essential oil diffuser for your home. With its simple, easy-to-operate design, it’s the perfect pick for anyone. If you’re looking for something small and cheap without sacrificing performance, we recommend the Asakuki Oil Diffuser 100ml (available at Amazon)

During our testing, we determined that the top oil diffusers are simple to operate, do not overwhelm your home with fragrance while diffusing, and that special features (such as LED lights or upscale materials) don’t always make for the perfect essential oil diffuser.

Best Essential Oil Diffuser

Saje Aroma Om

  • Material: Ceramic and cement
  • Settings: Continuous or interval
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 88ml

The Saje Aroma Om diffuser is the best essential oil diffuser we've tested. It is simply elegant, featuring an aesthetic ceramic cover, BPA-free plastic water tank, and an angled spout. It provides an instant décor upgrade for your home, while also performing exceptionally well.

The Saje diffuser runs quietly and efficiently. It's easy to use, clean, and store, plus it comes with an LED light and automatic shut-off feature for ultimate functionality. As it diffuses, the Saje Aroma Om emits a steady stream of delightful fragrances of your choosing.

One potential downside is if you prefer just a subtle scent, its diffusing power may potentially be too much for you. It produces a strong scent that fills the room quickly, which is surprising considering it has one of the smallest capacities of any diffuser we've tested. However, this makes it a great essential oil diffuser for large spaces.

Pros

  • Cool design

  • High-quality materials

  • Easy to operate

Cons

  • Nothing we could find

Best Value Essential Oil Diffuser

Asakuki Portable Essential Oil Diffuser (100ml)

  • Material: Polypropylene
  • Settings: Intermittent timer and automatic shut-off
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 100ml

Asakuki is a popular name in the essential oil diffuser space, so we knew we had to try it for ourselves. We tested both the 100-milliliter and 500-milliliter models. We love how it creates a noticeable but not overwhelming scent during diffusing at an affordable price.

Despite having less water capacity, the smaller Asakuki diffused the citrus scent we used in testing evenly. The smaller model provides a nice touch to the room with its simple white lid, wood grain bottom, and different light and mist modes.

We also liked how the smaller model diffused so quietly during testing. It was little more than a whisper while it was running, compared to the occasional sputter the larger Asakuki emitted. Easy to operate and clean because of its basic plastic covering, this Asakuki essential oil diffuser is a solid choice for a first-time user who may not prefer the overpowering scent of the 500-milliliter mode.

Pros

  • Simple design

  • Quiet

  • Even diffusing

Cons

  • None that we could find

Best Portable Essential Oil Diffuser

Vitruvi Move Diffuser

  • Material: Metal and BPA-free plastic
  • Settings: 4- and 8-hour settings
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 60ml

No plug? No problem. The Vitruvi Move essential oil diffuser offers superior portability with its wireless design and two different charging methods. It’s also lightweight, making it even easier to move around wherever you need a fragrance burst.

Its wide mouth makes it easy to add water and essential oils, although the water tank’s capacity is small. It runs for up to eight hours, creating a fine mist that delightfully wafts throughout your home.

The Vitruvi Move is a fantastic option for someone who wants to easily move the diffuser from room to room. Plus, the modern design makes it a stylish choice, too.

Pros

  • Portable

  • Stylish design

  • Multiple charging points

Best LED Essential Oil Diffuser

InnoGear Upgraded 150ml Diffuser

  • Material: Polypropylene
  • Settings: Continuous, intermittent, and automatic shut-off
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 150ml

The Innogear Upgraded 150ml essential oil diffuser didn’t hold up against the newer models we tested, although it is still a great diffuser. The features we loved initially, such as the measuring line, built-in measuring cup, and built-in LED lights are still big pluses for us, but its diffusing power was lower than others we tested.

Despite its lower score in our third round of tests, the Innogear still has unique features that make it a good purchase. For example, the top of this essential oil diffuser locks into the base for an automatic close instead of just lifting off like most models.

The locking feature made it easier for us to take it from room to room without spilling the water and the oils inside, meaning the Innogear is a smart choice for anyone who tends to be a bit clumsy. The LED mood lighting also rotates so you can easily choose the color you want, and it can also conveniently function as a night light.

Pros

  • Great price point

  • Doesn't spill easily

Cons

  • Design is a little boring

Best Modern Design Essential Oil Diffuser

Stadler Form Jasmine Aromatherapy Diffuser

  • Material: Plastic
  • Settings: Interval mode and continuous mode
  • LED light: No
  • Capacity: 100ml

If you’re looking for a diffuser that will blend in with modern, minimalist decor, the Stadler Form Jasmine essential oil diffuser has you covered. It comes in black or white, and if it weren’t for the barely noticeable power and interval buttons on the front, it could be mistaken for a decorative bowl. Its diffusing capabilities were about the same as the others we tested except that the mist wasn’t as dense.

While that means it took a little longer for the aroma to build up in our test room, it also means that it can run for many hours longer than other diffusers. In continuous mode, the Jasmine can run for about seven hours.

Switch it to interval mode, and it can last for 21 hours. If you’re looking for a small but steady stream of oils, you’ll like the Jasmine diffuser.

Pros

  • Minimalist design

  • Steady stream of oils

Cons

  • Takes a bit longer for aroma to build up

URPOWER Essential Oil Diffuser

  • Material: Plastic
  • Settings: Continuous, intermittent, and automatic shut-off
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 100ml

The Urpower essential oil diffuser is great for small rooms. The only setback is in the reservoir capacity, which is small but powerful.

We like the shape, lighting options, buttons, locking base, and ease of use. The reservoir capacity is on the small side, though. If you want a diffuser that will run all day, check out our No. 1 pick.

Pros

  • Lightweight

  • Works great in smaller rooms

Cons

  • Difficult to open

HoMedics Connect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser

  • Material: Plastic
  • Settings: Continuous and intermittent
  • LED light: Yes
  • Capacity: 140ml

The Homedics essential oil diffuser isn’t the most attractive of any diffuser, but it makes a nice addition to your room if you’re looking for something simple. It has a color-changing nightlight and is not too noisy as it diffuses.

It is easy to use and clean—just rinse the inside with water. The scent production is also top-notch, easily filling a room.

Pros

  • Nightlight

  • Quiet diffusing

  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • May not be built to last

How We Tested Essential Oil Diffusers

The Best Essential Oil Diffusers of 2024 (13)

The Tests

To find which essential oil diffuser to recommend, we looked for ease of assembly, use, and cleaning, as well as strength of diffusion, portability, mist output, aesthetics, noise level, special features, and overall experience.

For testing, we used an upstairs bedroom and chose a cheerful blend. Each essential oil diffuser was shut in the bedroom and turned on to continuous mist (except the nebulizers, which only operate intermittently). We popped our heads into the room at scheduled intervals to check the aroma’s strength.

How to Choose the Best Essential Oil Diffuser for You

When deciding which essential oil diffuser to buy, it is important to know the difference between the four types available. Each offers unique features, with pros and cons to consider before purchasing.

  • Nebulizing diffusers work by using a pressurized airstream and jet nozzle. This process diffuses the oil into smaller amounts that may be beneficial for aromatherapy. This diffuser uses no heat or hot water but is also the noisiest and priciest of all oil diffuser types.

  • Ultrasonic essential oil diffusers work by using a small underwater disk to break up the essential oils for even distribution. This type of diffuser is quiet, uses no heat, and can act as a humidifier during ultrasonic diffusion.

  • Heat essential oil diffusers act by using a heated plate to diffuse the essential oils into the air, using water mixed with heat at low levels. These models are an economical and silent alternative.

  • Evaporative essential oil diffusers release the oil in segments, relying on airflow to push the scent into the room. These diffusers hit the mark for speed, but the oil can often become diluted.

How To Use An Oil Diffuser

The best place for an oil diffuser is in the center of the room for even scent distribution. Place it on a flat surface and plug it into a nearby power outlet. The type of casings varies between designs. Generally, to fill the diffuser with water, lift the top off.

Use room temperature water when filling your diffuser. Only fill it to the line marker. Most diffusers use three to 10 drops of essential oil per use, but you can consult manufacturer information for more specific instructions. After filling the water tank, replace the lid and flip the switch to begin diffusing.

Are Essential Oil Diffusers Safe To Use?

There is some evidence that essential oil diffusers could be harmful to your health.

For example, David Stukus, a pediatrician and associate professor of pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio told the New York Times that oil diffusing may be most concerning for children with underlying conditions such as asthma and allergies, saying that essential oils are “really good at infiltrating the upper and lower airways, which can irritate, especially in people with underlying chronic medical conditions such as asthma or allergies.”

Are Oil Diffusers Safe For Pets?

Oil diffusers may also be harmful to your pets. ASPCA lists the issue as complicated and recommends caution if using essential oils around your pets.

The oils are considered most dangerous in concentrated forms before diffusing, meaning your pet could suffer if the concentrated oil is ingested or gets directly on their skin. Cats may be more sensitive than dogs, and the risks associated with diffusing around them can be more serious.

If you decide to use an oil diffuser with pets in your house, consider which scents are important to keep your dog or cat safe. Do your research on which are toxic to pets before diffusing. We did not include pets when testing for this guide.
