The mission of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is to shine the light of the gospel upon our congregation, our community, and our world. To that end, we are a welcoming community that provides to all an opportunity to serve and to be served in the name of Jesus Christ.

Community 2.0: Introduction

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Welcome to the official kickoff of the Community 2.0 learning experience. I covered a few questions about the progam in the last blog post, but I will give you some more information in this introduction.

About the Course

The plan for this course is to deliver new lessons twice a week, via this blog. To participate in the course, follow along with the discovery exercises. The idea is that we will learn Web 2.0 tools by using Web 2.0 tools, and begin a discussion of how we can use these tools to expand our community and ministries at Redeemer (or wherever you may be). You may participate in this course entirely online, but if you prefer to supplement your instruction in person at Redeemer, the topics of the Tech Talks held between the Sunday services will parallel the online lessons. (If you are not able to attend the Tech Talks but would like to discuss the course face-to-face, please let me know and if possible we will find an alternate time to meet.)

Although the lessons will be presented twice a week, you may follow along at your own pace. I do ask that everyone please complete the first two lessons (on blogs and RSS) because those technologies will recur in later lessons. How much of each discovery exercise you do is entirely up to you, and if you feel more comfortable following along anonymously or using a synonym that is certainly fine. This course will not be graded! Questions are welcome - whether you are a complete newbie or you try to keep up on trends, I hope you will participate. Please respect the questions of all participants, and offer your own expertise and experiences as we move along.

Since this is a church-sponsored course, I will attempt to present each week an example of how church communities and the Episcopal Church are using the various technologies. However, I encourage you to explore the use of these technologies for your own interests as well. Chances are, whatever you’re into, there are other people on the internet who are also into it.

A note about this blog: comments are moderated, so when you submit a comment there will be a delay before it appears publicly. You do need to enter your email address to leave a comment, but it will not appear on the page - only I will see that. If you enter a web address, that will appear publicly. (To leave a comment, click on the link at the bottom of the post. It may say No Comments - that just means no one has yet commented.)

About Your Guide

My name is Ellen Wilson and I am a member of the vestry at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. I am also an instruction and technology librarian at the University of South Alabama. I have been fascinated with computers and technology since I was a child. I created my first website in 1994 and have continued to experiment with many developments since, for both personal and professional use.

I hope that by facilitating the course, I can help you explore and become comfortable with aspects of the web and technology that you have not previously encounterd. You may decide that you still don’t like blogs, RSS, Facebook, or Twitter, and that’s fine. You may find that you like one technology but not another, or you may become a techie like Father Ray. The journey is yours and I hope it will be enjoyable.

Community 2.0 FAQ

What is Community 2.0?

You may have heard buzzwords like Web 2.0, blogs, RSS, podcasts and more, but maybe you don’t really understand what the big deal is. Community 2.0 is designed to give you a chance to explore and experiment with the new and emerging technologies that are changing the way we use the internet to communicate. The Community 2.0 blog posts will guide you through learning these technologies by using them.

The goals for this program are:

  • to encourage members and friends of Redeemer to explore Web 2.0 technologies and applications.
  • to foster discussion about how these technologies can be used to further the mission of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer to shine the light of the gospel upon our congregation, our community, and our world.

This program was inspired by the Learning 2.0 program developed by Helene Blowers for the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, and adapted for the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer by Ellen Wilson.

Why is a church talking about technology?

Why not? In today’s world, our communication is mediated by technology. More and more we communicate via telephone, text, email, and voice. Even face-to-face communication is increasingly done by webcam. If the church does not talk about and use technology, it will lose its connection to millions of people and decrease its effectiveness in proclaiming God’s love.

Since Gutenberg invented the printing press, the church has used the vernacular to communicate essential truths to people. Technology is the printing press of the 21st century.

What topics will we cover?

Don’t worry if you don’t know what these are - this course will help you find out!

  1. Blogs
  2. RSS
  3. Social bookmarking & tagging
  4. Podcasts
  5. Photo applications
  6. Online video
  7. Online productivity applications
  8. Social networking
  9. Twitter
  10. Putting it all together

And whatever else comes up along the way.

Who can participate?

Anyone. You do not need to be a member of Redeemer. You can participate entirely online, as long as you have access to a computer with an internet connection.

Does it cost anything?

Nope.

What do I need to participate?

Access to a computer with an internet connection. A high-speed connection such as DSL or cable internet will be helpful for some topics, but not essential.

How do I participate?

Starting on June 1st, a new Community 2.0 blog post will be made twice a week. Each post will introduce a new topic, and include tasks for you to perform. Since this is a hands-on course, you will be learning about Web 2.0 technologies by using them. Follow along with each task to build your body of knowledge. Ask questions, comment on posts, share your findings with others in Community 2.0. We may also have in-person meetings at Redeemer if enough people are interested.

Questions?

Let’s hear them. You can leave a comment on this post with your questions, or email Ellen directly at  ekwilson at gmail.com.
